With a population of around 46 million people, South Africa has a modern infrastructure supporting efficient distribution of goods to major urban centers throughout southern Africa. The food retail sector continues to expand, while supermarkets, convenience stores and forecourts are rapidly becoming the dominant food retail outlets. From 2005 to 2006, South Africa’s total agricultural imports grew by almost 50 percent to $3.1 billion. In 2006, the United States exported approximately $170 million of agricultural, fish and forestry products to the country. Consumers in South Africa are demanding a wide range of imported food products, including health, convenience, and high-quality food items.
