The Turkish economy has enjoyed several years of growth since the financial crisis and recession of 2001, growing at a rate of around 4%. The nation boasts a population of around 70.5 million. In 2007, Turkey imported about $5.5 billion in agricultural products. The United States is a large single exporter of agricultural products to Turkey, holding a market share of about 7 percent in 2007. U.S. products have a good image in Turkey and consumers are open to different types of food products. There is a growing demand for diet foods, healthy products, and frozen food products. The restaurant, fast food, and hotel sectors are also growing at a tremendous rate, creating opportunities for southern U.S. suppliers.
