It is estimated that half of all food service products in Japan are imported in one form or another. The total value of U.S. exported agricultural food products to Japan in 2003 was $11.4 billion, or 34% of all agricultural food imports. The hotel, restaurant and institution (HRI) food service market in Japan was worth an estimated $261 billion in 2003. Items in which the U.S. has traditionally held an advantage, such as pork, beef, frozen potatoes, frozen vegetables, wine, etc. are heavily utilized by the food service industry in Japan. Japan is the world’s largest market for imported consumer food products, as well as the largest market for U.S. food and agricultural exports. As such, Japan offers U.S. food and beverage exporters a wide variety of opportunities, including servicing western restaurants, Japanese restaurants and hotels.
